BANK HOLIDAY BIKE MAINTENANCE CHECKS

Cutting a ride short due to something that could have been sorted in the garage isn’t the one.

Before you head out this bank holiday, spend a few minutes on these bike maintenance checks. Nothing fancy, just the basics to keep you breaking a sweat, so you focus on the journey and nothing else.

Follow these pre-ride bike maintenance tips:

  1. CLEAN UP YOUR CHAIN

Grab a bucket of warm, soapy water and a soft brush to scrub away any dirt. Pat it down with an old dry rag. Once dry, give the chain a squirt of GT85 while running the chain along to clean, lube and protect. Dab excess away with your old rag.

  2. CHECK TYRE PRESSURE

Before you jump on the saddle, check the PSI on your tyre sidewall and inflate if needed. Get your wheels working with you, not against you.

  3. TEST YOUR BRAKES

Squeeze both brake levers to make sure they feel firm, spin the wheels to check there’s no rubbing and have a look at your brake pads while you’re there. If anything feels off, sort it before you jump on.

  4. CHECK NOTHING’S COME LOOSE

Road buzz and rough trails can shake things loose. Take a minute to check your handlebars, saddle and bottle cage – make them secure. Doing this now beats having to walk your ride home.

  5. CHECK YOUR GEARS

Click through every gear while turning the pedals. If the chain’s hesitating or skipping, tweak now before it’s too late at the side of the road.

GT85 keeps chains in good nick but that’s just the start of bike maintenance. Once your bike’s clean, spray GT85 onto a rag and wipe down your cassette, derailleurs and frame to remove marks and bring back the shine. Use the red straw to get into awkward nooks and crannies and work everything in. Always wipe away excess.
