DIY MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

Whether it’s keeping your tools clean and lubed, making sure your bike chain’s running smooth, or stopping squeaks in the garage door, staying on top of these jobs saves time and hassle down the track.

Get the basics sorted on your DIY maintenance checklist and your kit will keep working as hard as you do. Here’s how to stay ahead of the game.

Your DIY maintenance checklist

First thing’s first – get your one can that does it all – GT85.

  • Lube and clean tools
Number one on our DIY maintenance checklist – and with good reason because your kit is expensive and important stuff.

Grab an old rag and wipe down your tools to get rid of whatever’s sitting on the surface. For tougher spots, a wire brush or steel wool will get the job done.

When you’re happy, apply a light coat of your favourite lube. Squirt the formula on the moving parts: hinges, blades or gears.

Remove excess oil – you don’t want to attract more gunk. Keep them dry and they’ll be ready for your next project.

  • Keep your bike chain smooth and free from grime
An unloved bike chain is no use to anyone, so as part of your DIY maintenance, you need to put the good stuff to work.

Using a soft-bristled brush and a bucket of warm, soapy water, give your chain a scrub to remove the gunk. Towel it off to dry or let it air dry.

Next up (and you know the drill) attach your red straw and hit the individual links with some of that lavender-smelling lube you’ve got in your back pocket. Rotate the pedals backwards to evenly cover the chain. Once you’ve done the full loop, wipe off excess with a rag.

  • Loosen up stiff garage doors and hinges
There’s no excuse for juddery door hinges – as part of your DIY maintenance you want to get these lubed so they open and close without complaining.

Right, think of every hinge in your garage, shed, motor – even a toolbox lid hinge. Take your black ‘n’ red can and fix on the straw and squirt it on the hinges. Work it in and wipe clean.

Hear that? No more squeaks.

  • Drive out moisture from contacts like the ones on your trusty power drill
Never let moisture get the better of your tools – drive it out with some DIY maintenance.

Get an old rag and cover it in GT85 – rub all over the casing to clean it and open it up to get to the electrical contacts. Fix on your red straw and blast away the moisture with your favourite formula. Get rid of excess, close it back up – happy days.
