GETTING RID OF RUST LIKE A BOSS

matts and crafts has unlocked the best kept secret

2 min read

Old hand tools have seen a lot of hard graft. But time’s cruel and can cause them to rust. Luckily for you lot, we’ve spoken to @Matts_and_crafts who is here to explain how he uses GT85 to lube, clean and protect them.

Take it away, Matt!

Step 1: Assess the tools
Before diving into the restoration process, it’s crucial to assess the condition of your tools. Check for rust, corrosion and any visible damage. Take note of the areas that require the most attention. This assessment will help you prioritise and plan your restoration process effectively.

Step 2: Spray with GT85
GT85 – your trusty companion in this endeavour – is a multi-purpose lubricating spray that works wonders on rusty and seized parts. Hold the can about 10-15cm away, give the tools a thorough spray down. GT85’s penetrating formula will start loosening rust and grime on contact, making the next steps much easier.

Step 3: Sand areas with 120 grit
Now that GT85 has had a chance to work its magic, it’s time to start scrubbing off the rust. Grab a piece of 120 grit sandpaper and gently sand the rusted areas. The combination of GT85 and sandpaper will remove the rust effectively without damaging the tool’s surface. As you sand, you’ll notice the rust coming off, revealing the underlying metal.

Step 4: Wipe away residue

With the rust loosened and sanded away, it’s time to wipe off the excess. Use a clean cloth or rag to gently wipe the tool, removing any remaining rust particles and GT85 residue. For tougher cases, you might need to repeat steps 2-4 to eliminate all traces of rust. This thorough cleaning ensures that your tools are not only rust-free but also primed for the final step.

Step 5: Final spray of GT85 to seal and protect

With your tools looking revitalised and rust-free, it’s time to safeguard them against future corrosion. Give the tools one final spray of GT85 to leave a protective coating. This coating acts as a barrier, preventing moisture and oxygen from coming into contact with the metal, thus reducing the risk of future rust formation.
