NO-NONSENSE MOTORBIKE MAINTENANCE WITH GT85
3 min read
Keep your ride running like a dream and follow the black ‘n’ red team’s motorbike maintenance checklist.
Grab your best kept secret as well as its handy red straw and an old rag because it’s time to put in some elbow grease.
Motorbike maintenance checklist:
- Lube your chain, use the red straw to get in it there
Roller chains
As you know, roller chains haven’t got a protective seal, so the pins and bushings collect grime. Keeping on top of it is key to prevent the gunk from wearing out your sprockets. Scrub the roller chain with a brush dipped in warm, soapy water and give it a rinse. Once dry, lube up the chain evenly for reliable road performance.
O-ring chains
This piece of kit has a built-in seal that retains lube. But don’t get too relaxed, you still need your best kept secret to prevent friction and keep the chain moving. Give the O-ring chain a wipe down to remove dirt, spray with GT85, use an old toothbrush to dislodge tough grime, rinse, and spray again to lube and protect.
X-ring chains
These chains are low maintenance thanks to their small surface area so there’s less friction and less wear and tear overall. For this type of chain, give it a spray and wipe to clean, then another spray to lube and protect.
- Spray the exhaust pipe, buff it with a cloth until you can see your reflection
If you want to keep your bike looking smart, don’t slack on protecting the metal bits. Keep an eye on areas like the frame, engine parts, exhaust pipes and any exposed metal spots. Give them a good coating or clean and lube regularly to keep rust at bay. - Shine up plastic
Remember the plastic bits that often get overlooked. Keep an eye on components like the fairings, mudguards, side panels and any other plastic parts. Regular lubing, cleaning and polishing can help prevent fading, cracking and general wear and tear – keeping your bike looking fresher for longer. - Leave a layer of protection
Give the body a full dust down and give it a buff with an old rag and your best kept secret. Remember the body work, windscreen, mirrors, seat and upholstery, and the rims.
