MEET MOTORHEAD JOE ACHILLES

Those in the know will have already heard great things from Joe Achilles but if you haven’t, then you’ve arrived in time because we’re back with this top lad and his mate, Ash, a performance driver and coach to talk motors.

In the mid to late 90s, Joe was a bike mechanic for many years, he never went without his can of GT85, it was always within arm’s reach. To this day, Joe uses GT85 on his bike, around the house and on his car.

The black ‘n’ red team are proud sponsors of Joe’s YouTube video and we’re chuffed to be sharing some exclusive pointers from his mate and pro-driver Ash Miller from their track day.

Take it away, Joe!

HOW JOE USES HIS FAVOURITE FORMULA

‘GT85 is a multi-purpose spray, it lubes, cleans and protects lots of things in our everyday lives, including our cars. As you hopefully know, I like to keep my content as organic as possible. I’ve been using this for the past 30 years. Way back when I had my first job as a bike mechanic, I used to use GT85 all the time and I still use it on my mountain bike today.

It’s also really useful around the house, in fact, just last week my patio door locking mechanism seized up – I sprayed some of this in the locking barrel and on the locks themselves and within 30 seconds it completely freed up and it feels as good as new.

‘Bringing it back to automotive, I have actually used this on all 3 of my cars recently:

  • My M3 Touring when I swapped the exhaust, I applied some of this to clean up the exhaust and protect it.
  • My M2, that’s had lots of mechanical work on it over the past 12 months or so.
  • My 2-litre cashmere Passat – when I’ve had it down at garages for a full service, the mechanic organically took out a can of GT85 and started spraying it underneath.’

PRO TRACK ADVICE

Now, for some advice from Ash Miller. This legend’s been racing for 25 years, he started off with go karts and did a bit of racing in MX5s, and then got into coaching.

Thanks for speaking with us, Ash! Tell us, what are your best kept secrets?

  1. ‘Try to stick off the racing line for the racing corner, just in case anything is coming behind you. Just to give them a bit of space in case there is a bit of speed differential.
  2. A lot of circuits have their pit lanes blend onto the circuit as the first corner is meeting it. Keep an eye on the mirrors as you’re coming out of the end of the pit lane to make sure nothing will wipe you out.
  3. Initially, if you’re on the track for the first time, getting to grips with stuff, do keep an eye on the people behind you but don’t focus too much on the mirrors and jumping out of their way. You’re all sharing the track together.
  4. Go out and do a handful of laps to start off with, if the tyre temperature and pressure are up and hot, come back into the lane and readjust them back to what your manufacturer recommends.’

Cheers lads!
